NETHERLANDS – LAND OF WATER / RIVERS
‘Water connects and divides. Over the centuries, the Dutch became more and more resourceful in taking and conquering the many water barriers. They built quays, locks, weirs and other waterworks. “True triumphs of engineering”, as Jac. P. Thijsse mentioned it in his Verkade album Onze groote rivieren. Abroad, people are especially amazed at the Dutch aqueducts: the Dutch build bridges so that a river can cross the street! It is, of course, also typically Dutch when you are driving on the highway, to see a boat gliding by somewhere above your head in invisible water.’
