The Crab Plover is resident on the coasts and islands of the Indian Ocean, where it feeds on crabs and other small animals.
Aldabra is a wintering area of international importance for Crab Plover according to criteria laid down by the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands. It is estimated that 3,000-3,800 individuals - which is 4-6% of the global population - winter on the Aldabra atoll.
